Driving Your RV on Slippery Roads

This time of year many RVers are heading south to get away from the bitter winters. If you’ve looked at the forecast lately you’ve probably noticed that the cold weather is creeping as far south as Florida. This means that the chance of you running into cold weather and slippery roads is highly likely.

Tow Vehicle

Ensure your tow vehicle has tires that are winter ready. This means buying a high quality all season tire or a good set of winter tires. If you’re vacationing in mountainous areas you’ll more than likely want to purchase winter tires. It is also important to ensure your gas tank is always half full, so you avoid your gas line freezing up. A half tank of gas is also a good way to ensure if you get stuck you have enough gas to keep your vehicle running and warm. Always keep a couple of blankets in your tow vehicle that you can use to stay warm if you do break down.

Slow and Steady

Slow and steady truly does win the race. Remember to drive at a pace that is comfortable for you. Don’t let road bullies force you into driving faster than you need to. If driving 50 is comfortable for you then do it. Just remember to stay in the far right lane so people can pass you and to uphold the minimum speed limit (usually 45 for most highways).

Patience

Patience is a virtue. Learn to enjoy the drive to where you’re going. Don’t think about how long it’s taking to get to your destination or what you would rather be doing. Just enjoy the moment and then appreciate what you have once you get to your destination!

Eliminate Distractions

If you find yourself distracted eliminate what’s distracting you. Turn off the radio. Put your phone in an area where you can’t reach it until you pull over. tell the kids to quiet down. Distractions can cause even more trouble than the actual road conditions.

Final Thoughts: Drive safe and drive within your comfort zone.
